It’s Time to Make New Year’s Resolutions for Your Car

Setting resolutions for your car can help you save money on costly repairs and help you get more life out of your vehicle. Whether you have a shiny new vehicle or are driving a trusted-and-true used ride, these tips will help you extend the life of your car.

  • Read Your Owner’s Manual – This is one of the most important pieces of equipment in your car. It tells you make and model-specific information that can help you get the most out of the car you drive.
  • Check Your Tire Pressure Once a Month – Underinflated tires wear out faster than properly inflated tires. Poor tire pressure also contributes to poor gas mileage. You also want to make sure you’re not over-inflating your tires, as this can lead to a blowout. A tire gauge is an inexpensive and valuable tool that can help you keep your tires in tip-top shape.
  • Rotate Your Tires Every Six Months (or 6,000 to 8,000 miles) – Rotating your tires periodically makes them last longer, which saves you money in the long run. Nobody wants to drop $800 for a brand new set of tires before it’s absolutely necessary.
  • Change Your Oil Every Six Months (or 5,000 miles) – This is one of those things that you should verify in your owner’s manual. Every manufacturer has a recommendation for how long you should go between oil changes. They will likely also suggest the type of oil that makes the car last longer. You can change your oil and rotate your tires at the same time!
  • Fill Up Your Engine Coolant – Check under your car every so often to make sure you don’t have a coolant leak. Coolant is the fluid that keeps your engine from melting down from excessive heat. This is not something you want to go without. Take a look at the reservoir under your radiator cap to make sure you have enough coolant. Do NOT check your coolant while your engine is still hot.
  • Keep Tabs on Your Battery Life – Most of us check our phone battery multiple times each day, mentally keeping up with our chargers. Your car battery is even more important and much harder to replace. Most auto shops will check the life of your battery for a reasonable price, so try to ask for a check when you’re getting your oil changed and your tires rotated. Why not know? Your car will generally need a new battery every four or five years, so you should keep a close eye on it and prepare to purchase a new one if your car battery is around that age.

Tip: Print or write the resolutions you chose for your car on an index card. Decide on the dates you want to take your car in for routine maintenance and put them on the card. Keep it in your dash or center console and check off the tasks as you do them. Remember, you’re forming great habits to get the most out of your car!
